Ah answer to the bells
by Susan Yeadon, Nova Scotia, Canada
Personel Care Worker, Aged 43
Not able to leave well enough alone...I went on the hunt for the answer and found three!
The saying "saved by the bell" "dead ringer" and "graveyard shift" supposedly all came from the practice of attaching signalling devices to corpses, many buried quickly due to the spread of disease in those times. A worker would stand watch in the graveyard overnight to monitor the bells.
Believe it or not! (couldn't resist)
