Remembering the Dead

Bella
by Catherine, Sydney, NSW
Business Development, Aged 27

When my mother in law died a few years ago the Minister visited the family saying he was looking forward to all the family members attending the funeral. He was a little shocked when we told him that our 18 month old kelpie, Bella, would also be attending.

Bella had been a black fluffy ball of joy for the family who had gone through so much in the preceeding 2 years. Her attendance at the funeral raised a few eyebrows however most people welcomed her exuberent presence. She seemed to understand the solemnity of the occasion and was on her best behaviour during the ceremony.

Having Bella at the funeral made a lot of people smile on such a difficult day. Her presence allowed people to be more relaxed and comfortable with the situation. I hope that other church's let four legged family members attend as they are as much a part of the family as everyone else!
