Gone But Not Forgotten

My Mother loved Cottesloe beach, its pristine white sand, deep blue ocean and golden sunsets. A long time member of the 'lotus club', a club of old (the youngest was about 70) surfies, she swam every day, on those days too wild to swim she would put on a coat and scarf and head into the wind. Her wish was to visit the beach just once more before she died. We spent an hour walking barefoot, paddling, she picked up a shell, which she kept to the end, a small link with a place she called 'heaven'. After her death I invited her club members to join me and my daughters on the beach, we ate fresh fruit, drank champagne and shared stories about the impact of her life on ours. We then each took a handful of her ashes and waded out into the calm ocean and scattered her, celebrating & honouring her life -
